Who We Are

Friends in Faith Serving Emporia (FFSE) is a local project made up of people from the faith communities of Emporia who have a desire to grow in faith, care for the community and seek to live as servants of God and one another.

FFSE is being developed in cooperation with the Center for New Community, a faith-based organization working with churches across the country in similar commuinty mission and faith-based organizing projects, with funding in part from the Wheatridge Foundation, the Methodist Health Ministry Fund, and the Kansas Health Foundation.

An FFSE steering committee, comprised of pastors and lay leaders from participating congregations, the local FFSE coordinator, and other interested people from the community, directs the project in all its phases.

Basic Principles

Bible Study

Gatherings always begin with Bible study and theological reflection as the guiding principle for subsequent planning and discussion.

Participants reflect on what the scripture text says to them and what that understanding might mean for serving the community.

Listening

To discern community needs, the project relies on an organized "listening process" which involves one-to-one interviews with people throughout the community. The ongoing "listening process" includes two goals:

  • Discernment of community needs and,
  • Building relationships among members of the community.

Other sources of information about community needs are also utilized as available.

Project Focus and Planning

As general needs become evident through the listening process, FFSE will endeavor to verify specific needs, identify related issues, determine a specific project focus, and develop realistic and attainable goals and action plans to address the identified need.

Organized Action

Church and community leadership teams will work together to address the identified needs and concerns.

Celebration

As efforts bring accomplishments we want to celebrate them, both to acknowledge the achievements and to inform the public about the goals attained. Such celebrations also offer avenues for others to join in future efforts.
